Pick a Project and Time and come Sew with Lorene

  • Choose from a variety of items to decorate with or use as gifts/stocking stuffers!
  • All patterns will be provided or will be free down-loadable patterns.
  • Pick a project and pick a time. The first person to pick a project selects the time for that project, unless the time is already taken.
  • Register at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Purchase/select fabrics and all supplies before class (and complete pre-cutting if project requires).
  • Equipment and tools vary depending on project and are listed on supply lists below.

Supply Lists


Pillow
  • ½ yd fabric for pillow body
  • ½ yd ruffle fabric A
  • ¼ yd ruffle fabric B
  • 1/3 yd ruffle fabric C
  • 18”x18” piece of lightweight - medium batting
  • Polyester thread
  • 18” pillow form

Mug rug or candle mat or potholder
  • 2 rectangles of fabric and a piece of batting a few inches larger than you want the final product to be.
  • Fabric for binding (fat quarter or 2 width of fabric strips 2 ¼“ wide)
  • Scraps of fabric for applique
  • Matching threads
  • Fusible web large enough to cut out applique
  • Extra layer of batting or Insul-Brite if you will be making a potholder.

Placemat – strips (set of 2)
  • 20 2 ½” width of fabric strips - the more variety the better- for front and binding
  • ½ yard of backing fabric
  • Two pieces of interfacing 18” X 22”
  • Thread to match backing fabric

Placemat – ribbons (set of 2)
  • 1 fat quarter for center
  • 1 fat quarter for corner trims
  • 1 Fat eight or a 5” width of fabric strip for corner trims
  • 2/3 yd for borders and binding
  • 1/2 yd for backing
  • (2) 15x18 rectangles of batting of your choice. If not, fusible basting spray is recommended.

Christmas tree napkins (set of 2)
  • 1/3 yard each of 2 contrasting fabrics
  • Coordinating thread

Tree ornaments
  • Few scraps of green fabrics. (other items will be supplied by the instructor)

  • 1 fat quarter for stocking back
  • ½ yd fabric for lining
  • 2 16”x20” pieces of batting
  • 12 strips of 3 ½” wide fabrics. 3 need to be 18” long the others about 12” long
  • Size 14 or 16 machine needle
  • Thread
Tree quilt 59”x59”
  • 68 5” squares
  • 2 ½ yd background fabric
  • 5/8 yd binding
  • 3 ½ yd backing
  • Batting
  • Thread

Tree wall hanging
  • 68 2 ½” squares. Exact amount for backing has not been calculated but it should be in the neighborhood of half as much for background, backing, etc.

Walk the dog wristlet
  • 1 9" or longer dressmaker size nylon zipper
  • 1 fat quarter for the exterior, the wrist strap and swivel clip tab
  • 2 fabric rectangles 5" x 7" for the lining
  • 2 fusible fleece rectangles 5" x 7"
  • 1 fabric rectangle 5" x 7" for the pocket
  • 1 piece of medium weight fusible interfacing 4’’ X 18”
  • one 1" swivel snap clip and one 1” d-ring (Available for purchase from instructor $1.00)
  • Remember your zipper foot

Snappy coin purse
  • 2 6” squares of fabric for exterior
  • 2 6” squares of fabric for lining
  • Thread
  • Steel tape (will be furnished by instructor)
  • Also bring a pair of old sturdy scissors or kitchen shears for trimming steel tape

Car trash bag
  • 24” x 24” Piece of fabric- preferably heavy fabric such as drapery, canvas, laminated or denim fabric. If using
  • quilting cotton instead back it with iron-on interfacing.

  • 2 1-inch d-rings (Available for purchase from instructor $.50)

Call me bag
  • 2 fat quarters
  • Thread
  • Other items needed and the pattern are in the kit (available for purchase from instructor $10.00)
  • Remember your zipper foot

Project bag
  • 2 fat quarters, coordinating or the same fabric, for front and back or ½ yard of fabric
  • ¾ yd coordinating fabric for border, handle, trim and binding
  • 1/3 yd fusible interfacing
  • Thread
  • Other items & the pattern are in the kit (available for purchase from instructor $10.00)

Instructor: Lorene Fleming
Instructor Bio: Surry County native, Lorene McCann Fleming, started making doll clothes with a needle and thread around 4-5 years old. She started making clothes on her mother's treadle sewing machine at 9-10 years old. As a senior in high school, Lorene even made bridesmaid dresses for her and her sister for a cousin's wedding. Lorene is a retired home economics teacher and has been quilting for 17 years. She has taught several beginning quilting classes and enjoys planning and hosting quilt retreats. While she enjoys making quilts, Lorene often prefers to make bags, wall hangings, and other small projects.
