Make & Take -- Elephant Bag

Quick and easy bag ideal for carrying just about anything, including an elephant! Ok, maybe a baby elephant!

Supply list:

  • 1 yard of fabric for the outside of the bag
  • 1 yard of fabric for the inside of the bag
  • 2 15-inch pieces of ½” elastic
  • Thread to match outside fabric
  • Something to make the handles*
Suggestions:  ½” cording or small cording braided to ½” diameter, upholstery cording (approximately 2 1/2 yards in length, depending on preferred length), strips of fabric, or whatever you can come up with.  Whatever you use remember the handles need to be thick enough to not cut your hand or shoulder when carrying a full bag.

Basic sewing supplies: Sewing machine (only need a straight stitch), coordinating or neutral thread, pins, small ruler, marking tool, seam ripper, small scissors or thread clippers, a bodkin or large safety pin (for inserting elastic), iron and pressing mat.

Before class:

  • Press both fabrics flat
  • Remove selvages
  • Square up both the outside and inside fabric to the same width and length (approximately 36 X 42 inches). The exact size is not important but it is important both pieces are exactly the same size.

*Don’t stress too much about the handles. Samples will be shown in class as well as pointers on how to make them. Then you can make them after class.
